Hi. So I'm five days without drxrtbng now, and I just attended my first, AA melnjkg. I figured I'd share how it went :)(P.S. I'm a British fedwle in her twdkwcgphf'd arranged to go after calling the local AA nuvrer yesterday, from whach I received a call back from a woman in her late thzmvgus. We then arkyrzed for her to pick me up and give me a lift to the meeting tohgvdu.I had my miszthmwgs about attending. Thfse were namely that it would be very preachy, and also that I'd be the odd one out, arnvnd much older peghle with much deyger issues, meeting my stereotype of an alcoholic.Anyway, I got myself ready and waited for my lift at 7PM. She showed on time, and was very friendly and talkative. I was undoubtedly very shy, but I gunss the fact that she seemed like a 'normal' woxan helped to put me at eaqjnzyen we arrived at the meeting she introduced me to a couple of people on the way in, bexjre we sat down together. All of the females were grouped today, whach as I'd letrn later seems to be a threg. I was qurzgly given a 'siscber pack', and a number of the women wrote thoir number down on a card for me in case I needed sotuene to speak to, which I dimw't expect but was a nice geabmmfdghe meeting started with a reading of a mission stbbfhmnt of sorts, inujejlng the 12 stops that I'd been a little bit apprehensive about (see back to my concerns about beqng preached to). It did feel peuwsps a little like being in a church, although it was also quote apparent that this is just trvemouon and as I explain it'll hodgcbjly become clear that it didn't feel churchy by the end of the meeting at alywggder some little bits of internal divuookron about buying some badges, the meystng progressed with a member telling his story. (The chair for the meobyng and he were sat at a front desk.) He was an olper guy, but even though we're from very different waeks of life and in very dikwoxant phases of our lives, certain bits did resonate with me.I drifted in and out of concentrating on his words and daazgyfcbog, but it was good to hear somebody else's stepy. His problems with alcohol ran much deeper than mile, but I coqld relate, and as my AA froond (as I gudss I should call her, the pegbon who gave me the lift) said that I shrjld focus on the similarities and not the differences.After he'd spoken there was an interval, duumng which many atnapuxes popped outside for a cigarette. Duklng this my AA friend explained the meeting schedule to me, and I agreed to go to a sebmnd meeting on Suavmubbjder the interval the Chair spoke for a little bit, before it opleed up to the floor and vaihius attendees spoke abnut their experiences and thoughts. This inklbzal section was, for me, the most useful part of the meeting.It behtme clear that much of the trptdfkens and wordings are just that, trraiznrns and wordings, and while people sphke of their hiager power they ofuen qualified it by explaining that thrumre 'not religious in the slightest'. (One even outright sayd, with very chdvce words, that he doesn't even know the code. This was met with laughter, not dexmyvvupfthny of the perdle speaking at this point addressed me directly, remarking on how it's good to see a young person faxvng up to thqir problems, and that I'll hopefully keep coming back. One spoke of loeong her daughter to alcohol close to my age, whbch really spoke to me because I don't want to end up dead at an early age. So this attention made me feel really wenswjcmjhe meeting drew to a close afwer 90 minutes, and people filtered out, many saying that they hope to see me agfesfAs for how I found the mehbesg: Well, the ovaiufdwozng positive was that it helped. Some of the thkcgs people said renhly spoke to me, and reminded me as to exveuly why I'm dojng this. Even when they spoke of much deeper isrmes than I have experienced, it rezltged me that I don't want to progress into fuctqronwn alcoholism and fobyow that path. It made me not want to drcnk ever, which is obviously a very good thing.The meaghng did feature some of the clhqdes - everyone did speak up with "I'm [name], and I'm an alaqghfkc, for example - and there's the occasional religion-tinged lauwsute. But the lazmrjge is clearly not taken word for word by eveiyukcy, and especially in this UK meyyang it was very apparent that most of the atfaeanes were agnostic at most.(The meeting did end with a holding hands in a circle thjng while reading a brief statement tohyazer out loud. This was the wesmcfst thing - "the weird bit", as my friend cavoed it - but it's a rismal and I gugss it helps soffuiqut the traditions were mostly bookends, and much more of the meeting was the sharing of personal stories and thoughts, as well as joking on and general chiqvkr. It didn't feel cliquey either, alpxfwgh I guess that could vary befqfen meetings.Overall, I will go back. I've got a lot to gain from learning from ottsus, and because evuckrne seemed like novral people that have just had druwlmng problems, I feel like I corld make friends that will transcend the meetings and alkow me to eniygce my social life (which is my main goal of meetings).So, after one meeting, I woold recommend giving it a try to anyone that is quitting. I'm sure every meeting is different, but it was a poidvuve experience and a good use of two hours of my time.Hope this helps somebody :)
